transverse myelopathy

Transverse Myelopathy (TM) is an acute inflammation of the spinal cord. The inflammation is generally confined to a specific place or places on the cord although associated dysfunction is usually seen on both sides of the body (bilateral). TM is one of the manifestations of a rare disease called Devic's syndrome which resembles multiple sclerosis.

Transverse Myelopathy is associated with both motor and sensory dysfunction in those parts of the limbs and trunk supplied by nerves arising in the spinal cord at or below the point of inflammation. Symptoms include sensory, motor, urinary, bowel and sexual dysfunction.
